I have a menu with K2 categories which lists the items in the specified category. Right now when i click on the title/thumbnail i can get to the item's page and load the rest of the article. I wonder if it's possible to have a "read more" button on the category page and when i click on that it would stay in that page and just load the rest of the article and show it on the same page (without leaving it).

This can be done in a template override. You can load of the item's content and use a jQuery script to hide/ show these elements.
