Until a couple of months ago, my K2 items always showed "Written by <author alias>" but then began to show Author instead of the alias. I want the alias to show as all the items are created by a Super User from material submitted by the actual author whom we'd like to credit. Joomla articles works correctly in this respect and K2 was ok until a couple of months ago (I'm not sure if I did a K2 update at that time). I've just updated to the latest K2 version and also Joomla 3.5 but the problem still exists.

Why is this no longer working as before and how can I get it to work now?

If you add ?template=protostar to your URLs is the alias shown?

I tried what you suggested but K2 items are still showing the Author not author alias. I have not changed the template I am using (ZOO-ZT-News) since the 'Written by' was showing the alias.

Just after the above reply I had a thought and checked the Item view options for the articles and see that I have 'Enabled K2 Plugins' . I disabled this and now it is working correctly. Perhaps I enabled this at some point around the time the author display changed. Everything else seems OK so I'll keep the K2 plugins disabled.
