I recall a mod claiming that K-2 would have a professional release after the update. Is 2.7 what they used to refer to as 3.0? When will we get to see what this professional release includes. I have not upgraded to 2.7 because of what I view module layouts being to spread out

You recall correctly but 2.7 is not 3.x.
2.7 is the last major version which will support older Joomla! versions.
3.x is a completely new, redesigned and engineered version.
