On one of my client sites, running K2 2.7.1 processed image quality has suddenly dropped precipitously. It was set to 74 which I felt was a nice balance between quality and size given their mixed image style, but even having bumped it up to 85%, the processed image quality looks so poor it's as if I'd run it through photoshop at 5-10% JPG quality.

Image processing quality in options:

Resulting image quality:

Original image file is larger and a 24bit png:

55% jpg quality in photoshop is better than 85% in K2:

In fact, K2 image processing is looking a lot like Photoshop save for web, jpg at 5-10% quality.

Hello .pngs are lossless in contrary to .jpg format.
The quality is suspiciously low but a loss when transforming to jpg is to be expected?

The photoshop generated one is a png, can you send me the actual jpg one?

Hi Krikor,

These are all screenshots - which on OSX is a .png file, but they're screenshots of either files or the image in the photoshop save-to-web screen.

I typically upload to K2 as png to start from the highest possible quality.

Here are three files:

- the .png original - www.dropbox.com/s/zj6hkbscqcod4qt/source-file.png?dl=0
- the K2 output at 85% - www.dropbox.com/s/r6l85c47ag7saj4/k2-at-85%25.jpg?dl=0
- photoshop output at 55% -https://www.dropbox.com/s/953v4179i8oi70i/photoshop-at-55-percent.jpg?dl=0

Unfortunately this is how GD (PHP image processing) works.
It does not handle png's that good. This is why we opted for ImageMagick as well in newer versions.

I would recommend using an extrafield in your template as an extra image if you want to upload an image and have it stay as-is.
