I found a solution, if you select "Mute audio on initial playback" under video parameters in the plugin settings. Auto play works. Without doing that auto play would only work if I clicked on view frontend from backend of Joomla and/or if I was already on the page and clicked on the navigation link for the page to act as a reload of the page because just refreshing the page would not work.
