It's "Item counter (next to title)" and "Item counter (next to sub-category title)" option in Category parameters settings...

Hey sara I know exacty what you mean. It is all how you are menu linking. For example, what K2 doesn't tell you is how to properlly menu link... You sort of have to discover it on your own.
So here it is. When you menu link you have to really plan how and what you want to do on your website. For example, say you want a frontpage of your blog site. you can accomplish this two ways, with or without K2. The way without K2 is to have you make an article i.e. and put your CSS and content on that front page, any moule layouts per your theme etc. Ok that is without K2.
With K2 you need to make a category i.e. Frontpages and set the item view parameters (the very last paremeter because you will be in ITEM VIEW for your menu page)... Ok, with that said now you create Items (which are equivalents to articles in reg joomla) and assign them to this frontpages category you created. Now with this you shut everything down on the frontpages category via the last item view paremeter we talked about. This will basically give you a blank and open page to put whatever you want via that frontpage item. For example my blog front page is called front page blog (item) When I menu link I link to the K2 Item which is called front page blog.
Now, you can name any front page item and attach it to the paremeters of the Frontpages category. Now if you want another page that is a subcategory to your "blog" menu item that subpage would be attached to the frontpage category as well. Now say that you have a subpage you want to name User Blogs... Well then under the User blogs Item you created for Frontpages you would attache a menu item that isn't a menu item but rather a User Blog and will attach a user blog to that subpage and now you get the idea of how to properlly menu item.
As a more advanced aside you can creat other items that will attach to a specific category and create items under that. When you attach a menu item now you will attach it to a K2 category. Again, play with the item view paremeters that are for category (2nd to last) and item view paremeter (that is last).
I like my method for creating a blank page at first with an item becase you get rid of the most crap up front and can subpage down to other things later.
How this made sense. And if someone has a better way please let me know.

I don't think this is what she really wants. and assigning a menu item to a category in mind is not what you're supposed to do. yea you could alter actuall code but I think the bigger point is that your not supposed to be pointing to whole categories.

You can edit the Category and set in the Category View Options to hide the Item Counter (next to title) also
