After logging in the front end I can edit modules but not the items.

I have enabled K2 front end editing so am perplexed now!

If you add ?template=protostar at the end of the default template will render (so no overrides).

I still cannot see the edit button. This is probably due to a K2 settings. Make sure you have properly setup your K2 User groups AND gave access to these categories.

PS. I checked the code in all our overrides the edit link is not stripped.

SOLVED

K2 settings for the User Group I created for Front Page editing was set to NONE but should have been set to ALL. I now have the EDIT ITEM button on items and the editor pops out and works!
