I thought I'd ask for advice before starting this project ... might save on some aggravation later. :)

I have never used multiple templates on the same site before but am thinking of using Ibento as a landing page and Matchbox for the rest of the site (want to use the grid and full width items). I like the impact of Ibento design but don't think I want it through the whole site. Part of the business is video development/editing so Ibento might really work for a landing page. Matchbox's understated elegant design I think works better for the "meat" of the site.

So my questions are: 1) will this work? 2) if so how should I proceed? ie should I install quickstart for matchbox and template for Ibento?

That would work. And I think you have this already figured out.
Once you install Matchbox 's quickstart package and Ibento as a standalone template you have to do the following.

a) Select the Ibento template to be shown as the template for that menu item
b) Publish Ibento's modules.
c) Now comes the tricky part. You have t set a base menu item so all orphan tag, user items, etc are rendered through that menu item.

This way you won't get the Ibento template in inner pages.

An update to Ibento will be released on later on today, nothing major. If you choose to use Joomla! 3.3 you should use that update.
