Downloaded and installed the free Takai template, and got the error "The template for this display is not available.”

On investigation, the file 'index.php' was not included in the manifest. I opened the download zip file, copied index.php to ../templates/takai and all is well.

You accidentally installed the update package.
You need to install the full template package.
