Hello,

When I login to backend and access Frontpage slideshow component, everything works fine.  When I try to create a new slide by clicking on New slide, nothing happens.  I only have about 6 slides which by the way work fine.  Also, I see that write permission is fine.
As a side question, is it possible to link slides to websites just like banners or logos?

If you are asking if you can link a slide with an external url the answer is "yes".
You just add the custom url you want to the slide link option.
