I get this message when selecting the article from FPSS

This is because your images are too small... FPSS can resize only bigger images to smaller....

The width of your pictures should be at least in the same (in pixels) with your slideshow.
If you set your slideshow to have 400px width -via the FPSS module parameters- and you use pictures with 380px width you will have the ugly gap. You either should use bigger images or reduce your slideshow width to 380px.

I have experimented with sizes but would like to try something different ???

How do you centralise the module to allow a black border on each side instead of a wide border down the right

You cannot... You should upload bigger images or reduce the with of the FPSS module!
When you do that remember to clean your cache please.
