I am having a similar issue issue, been using FPSS for years, just upgraded joomla to 2.5 (and FPSS to match, all hosted on Amazon cloud) now I cannot set any image or thumbnail for a slide, neither selected from local disk, nor upload works. I just get the broken image icon.
FPSS v3.2.0
media/com_fpss - writable
cache - writable
mod_fpss - installed
mod_fpss_stats - installed

Probably your issue is being related with permissions.
Please install Admin Tools from www.akeebabackup.com/ in order to fix your permissions as they should be and then reinstall the extension.
Right permissions on all joomla sites:
755 for folders
644 for files

Hi, thank you for the swift reply.
Sadly this didn't fix it
I installed Admin tools and used Fix permissions it to set all folders to 755 and all files to 644
I reinstalled frontpage slide show, v3.2.0_j1.5-2.5.zip
FPSS information now shows:
media/com_fpss Not writable
cache Not writable
Logging onto the server and checking the permissions shows:
media/com_fpss 0755
media/com_fpss/cache 0755
media/com_fpss/samples 0755

Check your permissions and of course the upload memory size limit in your server...

message for administrator :
you always say the same thing but it's not our first website. we have check all the things you said. memory limit and permissions are good. nothing works : we can't upload image. It would be better for joomlawork to give us the good way to resolve this problem. we bought it !!!

The same archive
The test made in other instalation all functions worked very well

The instalation that not worked well is a subfolder maybe there is some
special setting
