I got an error message from SEO software: "This page contains an excessive number of <H1> headings! " it appears they all are coming from my slides? the title is H1?  how can I change this into a regular P tag and remain the size and look?

You may change it via the FPSS html file. However, this will change the styling too.

You should go to your FPSS template file you use and locate H1 in  the default.php file.
This is an example of the path for Movies template:
modules/mod_fpss/tmpl/Movies or the one you use/default.php

its the FSD template and I have found this string:

<?php if($slide->params->get('title')): ?>
<h1><a<?php echo $slide->target; ?> href="<?php echo $slide->link; ?>"><?php echo $slide->title; ?></a></h1>
<?php endif; ?>

changed it to h3 cleared cache, but it still states the title is H1???

It should have worked!
However, the best way to do this is by creating overrides in your template, in order not to lose your modification in the next FPSS upgrade.

my suggestion to the developers maybe in the next release not to make the title tags H1... otherwise it looks like spaming to search engines

Check again your modifications please cause this is the right way to change H1 to something else.

my apologies. Somehow it always reverts to the h1 after save trough filemanager Extplorer.
After I did it trough Control Panel it remained.
