I'm currently creating a series of websites for the purpose of displaying educational videos.

There are currently 6 sub sites:
www.theenglishfaculty.org
www.thebiologyfaculty.org
www.thechemistryfaculty.org
www.themathsfaculty.org
www.thehistoryfaculty.org
www.thepsychologyfaculty.org

Each site has a system for rating each video.

There is also a generic site www.thefaculties.org that I want to use as a search function for the sub sites and to display links to Most Popular, Most Viewed, etc from the sub sites.

My question is, is it possible for www.thefaculties.org to perform these tasks?

Although your sites are using K2, this isn't really a K2 question, but more a Joomla question.

I would suggest to ask on the Joomla forum site instead, unless your lucky and someone here has done it.

Do they all share the same database?

You are also going to have to look on the Joomla extension directory to see if there is a cross database search extension.
I did look at an extension a couple of years back (1.5) which linked many Joomla installs across multiple databases, but I cant remember its name.
