When building www.sodwanabay.org we looked at various systems but in the end settled on K2 because of its flexibility and ease of use.

We used a Joomlart template that worked well straight out of the box with K2.

My personal observations for you.
Initially, the site took around 10 seconds to load.
Noted the absence of custom favicon, instead the default Joomla one is loaded.
On the home page, I would consider a border below the readmore to separate between the items as the dotted line below category link makes that look like the separator between content.

A quick right click>Inspect gave a result of Unsafe JavaScript attempt to access frame with URL.

Navigating to another page Vis-Agie took around 15 seconds to load.
On inspection of that page, last count 190 errors and 4 warnings were returned. Issues with Google API and more unsafe Javascript.

Site looks good, but those error need to be looked at.
