Do you suggest that such banners be hard-coded into the main K2 content module (to the left or right of text) in the category.php and/or item.php template?

Is there some way to accomplish this goal for separate Joomla modules? For example, assign Module XYZ to only appear on specific Joomla menu items, including menu items for K2 categories and item views for certain K2 categories (or certain K2 templates)?

If your template has the positions that you intend to place the banners in, then you can use the modules and assign it to a specific category of a K2 menu item. If not then you can use the template overrides and place the codes inside the category or the item.php

If you use the module, you can always log in to administrator area and change the script.
