My problem is this:

My client will be allowed to create, edit and remove items from the frontend.

The frontend interface, however, is very limited.
1. the user has no control over, for example, image size (there should be some type of a form where user enters all image related info including thumb size)
2. frontend dashboard doesn't let user publish or delete an item (it only says unpublished)
3. there is no formatting control for text
4. no layout controls (like tables, columns etc...)

Is there another interface I'm not aware of with a better frontend user dashboard and more controls?

1. k2 creates several images for those uploaded thru the item image tab. They are selected at the category level to keep consistency. If you want people to put images into the item body itself you can accomplish this with jce, but you will have to deal with what they do.
