I have set up the K2 categories with 2 columns but it still displays as one. I am not sure where to start with creating a sub template. I have copied the contents across as mentioned in the tutorial but still am not sure how to get it formatted how I want it. are there sample subtemplates anywhere to start with?

I am trying to get a catalogue with some intro text and an image with a link to the full info. But I would like to display in two columns so I can fit more on the page.

Try to do it with the category settings first.
Go to the category in question and set the leading primary and etc columns to 2 and set the image size the same in all of them.
Sometimes i will turn leading off, use only primary items and specify the number i want and also the columns
