Extra Fields character limit was created by Michael Byrd
Hello,
We have a need to enter very large amounts of text in a series of extra fields using the PRE html tag.
There seems to be a problem when we paste lots of text, the field does not save. The cutoff appears to be around 48k characters. The extra fields are text areas. I changed the database field "extra_fields" in the k2_items table to use type MEDIUMTEXT rather than TEXT. This doesn't seem to fix the problem.

We are using Joomla 2.5.4 with K2 2.5.6.

I've tried saving without the editor option, and I've tried changing the editor I'm using (JoomlaCK) to TinyMCE, to no luck.

Anybody know what's going on?
Thanks!

Hi. Are you getting any error? K2 doesn't apply any limits, so you might need to alter the "extra_fields" field to LONGTEXT.

No error.
When I save the item, the page reloads and the extra field text disappeared, but I get the typical success message "Changes to Item saved".
The field saves fine if I only paste some of the text (up to 48 thousand-ish characters).

I tried changing the database field to LONGTEXT, but it's still not saving.

Maybe it has also to do with the encoding of the data. Keep in mind that K2 saves extra fields as JSON. First of all we need to ensure that the database does fit your content. Try to paste your content through phpmyadmin and see if it gets saved.

I went to manually add the data into the extra_fields field in the database through phpmyadmin, but the data was already there. It seems like the data is indeed being saved to the database, but it's not being retrieved to the editor window in the backend (or frontend template display).

Does anybody have any insight about this problem? Could it be a limitation of JSON? The field is saved in the database, but it's not being read back to the website once it's saved if the extra field has more than a certain number of characters. The extra field is blank once the editor loads, even though it's in the database.

Hi folks

I have exactly the same problem. I'm trying to put all the cities in for each of the states in the USA, when trying to put the cities for California I get to around Montebello (in alphabetical order) then the extra fields vanish.

Is there a fix for this yet, I see Brians comment is from 11 months ago and there aren't any new replies. I am happy to pay for this to be fixed, or pay for a plugin that fixes this etc.

Thanks.
