Same thing happens with me :(
Cant add/edit/change any settings for a user from the frontend's user login module.
The only way I can change anything is by doing it via the backend.

Hi. What version of K2 are you using? This should work fine on the latest version. Please make sure that you have K2 system plugin installed and enabled.

Just reloaded my testsite from scratch which is running:
Ubuntu 9.04 Server
Apache: 2.2.11
PHP: 5.2.6-3
MySQL: 5.0.75
Joomla: 1.5.14 Stable
K2: K2_v2.1_build20090909
Installed Joomla with a Rocketheme template; installed test data. Then installed K2, all went fine. Unenabled all the modules except for Main and the K2 ones.
System K2 plugin is installed and enabled. I've placed the 4 K2 modules on the main page and they work fine (regarding comments, items etc).
I then go and register a new user via the frontend, it sends me a confirmation email that I click to activate the account. I now log into the account and try to change anything in the account settings. When I click save it says that 'Your settings have been saved' but if I log back into the account settings I can see that they havent. I've tried this for the Avatar, but also realised that no settings can be changed (like from Male > Female).
If I try to change this user from Male > Female in the backend it works fine. So I changed this user to be in the Site Owner group so they could have full frontend access, but that still doesn't work.
I then created a user from the backend, and put them in the site owner group. Logged in with this new user and still couldn't change the account details from the frontend :(
All the directory permissions (Help > System Info > Directory permissions) are flagged as writeable.
Cheers,
Allan

Did a little more playing around and found that I could edit the 'Your name', email, language and timezone options from the frontpage, but everything else would not update (gender, description, avatar, url).

Go to Parameters,
In Advanced Setting,
Enable K2 User Group, Change into YES
Select a K2 User Group: Select the public user group of your website.
Hope Answer for your Question :)
