Sorry... maybe I'm missing something but I cannot find any menu option to display a list of categories as on the main page of the demo site. How can I get it?

Modules - K2 Tools - make a couple of copies of the module - then explore, the tools have 6 or 7 different uses, one of which is the category menu option. (K2 Tools installed with K2)

Sorry, that's not what I meant...

I would like to have a list with the image and the description of categories in the content position together with a list of the latest news as in the demo site. Is there a way to get this?

Group all your categories in one main category (let's call it Directory) then add a link from main menu to "Directory" using Item Listing Layout>>Categories link. Be sure you select only "Directory" category. For latest news, check in administration->K2->categories options for "Directory" category.
