I have the same problem on my localhost setup using MAMP... the URL generated for category images includes a duplicate path
http://localhost:8888/alpha/media/k2/categories/http://localhost:8888/alpha/media/k2/categories/1.jpg

This seems to be a problem with the template overrides in my RT Affinity template. I hope RT will update, but in the interim I have disabled the overrides by renaming the folder
/templates/rt_affinity_j15/com_k2
to something else, in my case to /com_k2_deactivate
Then I have enabled the default CSS styling for K2 under Parameters on the K2 dashboard. I have lost the RT CSS styling as well by doing this, but at least K2 works and I can continue to make progress on my project. Hopefully RT will do an update soon which will the changes in the K2 stable release.
This appears to affect the new RT Nexus template as well, which has K2 template overrides.

I had the same problem as well. Now I have updated the RT Affinity template to 1.5.4 and this solved the problem....
