Differentiate fields between basic and extended - is absolute evil.
Only one formatted text field, image and gallery in item is very bad.
It's must be types of field and have possibility to add or remove any field any time.

I think - K2 in nearest time not change this moment... and this make K2 - the worst solution for CCK or catalog engine for joomla.

and some little features:
1. In each field add option "show in only article view / show in only category view / show in both views"
2. In each textarea field add option "Editor on/off"
3. In link field - add options for linking to select any internal link source (menus, articles, k2 items)
4. Add date field type and support this fields by calendar module (For events catalogs)
5. Add "Filter by fields" module with possibility to add any q-ty of fields to filter.
6. Add "table" layout for category output
