Pardon me if this is a silly question, but I'm a noob to K2 and haven't been able to find a workaround for this.I'm building a site that has the structure state->town->content-type->content. What I would like to do is to have a category select box that shows only the state categories. Is there a way to do this in K2? Alternatively I could probably get by with an expanding tree structure that would start with state names and allow the user to drill down to whatever level of granularity he/she desires.Am I on the right track with choosing K2 to do this or do I need to try something else?

Yes, I have seen an modification to K2_content and use it at K2Joom.com.
I will be making this available as a download, hopefully later today with a bunch of other K2 plugins.
