Who knows anything about databases? was created by Frants Combrink
Interesting title don't you think?  (I posted this in the Joomla forum but it relates to K2 directly, so I hope it helps to find answers). After a week of trying it in
native Joomla, and trying extensions and CCK's as well, and finding an
extension (there is two) that seems to be able to do what I want, I
just need to know whether I am missing something since I am new to
Joomla. Here is a very good and very close example of what I want, only what I want is about 10 times bigger.See
the University website. The university is made up of Faculties. Each
Faculty has a department, and each department a set of course subjects.
Each faculty also has their own building block (nice), and the block as
a few floors, and each floor has some rooms (offices) where the
distinguised learned elaborate on the ideas of tomorrow and how to
teach us young ones about them effectively and efficiently. The
one little function which I have been trying to find, I know about
since I was able to create it about 10 years ago using MS-Access. I
have no-idea how to use Access anymore, but I know its possible. And to
best explain it, I will refer to the Access database as the
website....which I believe and the reason for choosing Joomla was...its
a database with pretty interface. So please join me on this journey of
discovery as you search (drill-down) with me.I the visitor goes
to the website to find out more about the place. I am a weird bloke and
I have weird needs and look for info in weird ways.I see the
Varsity has a couple of faculities. Hey, I like Languages.....”Faculty
of World Languages”. Within this faculty, I see they have no less than
12 language departments. “Itailian Department” since I always like the
Godfarther. Within the Italian Department I see they have 3 subjects:
Spoken Italian; Written Italain; Poetic Italian.I like poetry,
hence, you've guessed it: Italian Poetry. Withing this Subject I see
that Misses Warren is the lecturer. I also see that she has a few items
that she posted in this subject, some of which are poems. I also see
that other lecturers from other faculties and departments and locations
post in the Italian Poetry course....interesting. So, who is this
“Misses Warren” suppose to be. I can see that she is located in Block
B, 2nd floor, room 4. I click on her name an I see all her details.
Again, Block B, 2nd Floor, Room 4...which is her location. I see a
little map to her office room. I see her contact details; phone number,
email address, Skype mind you, and even a picture.....Wow, didn't know
Misses Warren was hot....yum yum. But what is this, she posts a lot of
items as I can see from her profile page. She posts items in the
Italian Poetry course, the English Written Language course, the Russain
Spoken language course, and even the Physics course. Physics course???
What is this? I click on the course and is taken to the physics course
page and see other lecturers also post items in the physics course from
other departments. Mathematics department in Block A, Sculpting
department in Block Z etc.In which department does the Physics
course fall I ask myself? Oh, Physical Sciences, which is part of the
Faculty of Natural Sciences. I like this place....lookout Misses Warren. So,
as you can see, I have started to drilldown from one end of the
database to a point in the other end, then from that point, I drilled
down again to the beginning. And when it came to MS Access, I did this
cross table linking via “Fields” With fields in Access you could have
your primary category listing with its sub-categories, and each item
within each category could be linked to more categories on a different
structure tree via fields.I have tried K2, and adding fields is
super easy (I find it easier to add fields than with jSeblod). Not sure
how the fields will be entered and used at the front-end, but for now
my navigation is more important. Also, when a lecturer (author)
enters content, they should (as they are the sole author) only be able
to edit and publish and delete their own content items. And when
entering content, although a blind eye could be turned for now, the
author shouldn't have to enter their location details for every item;
because they posted the item, and via fields, one can find their
location; and their location will be displayed with their item.Hence
my question: Who knows anything about data-bases? How do I do this in
Joomla? The section-category-articles restriction of Joomla1.5 is
solved with K2 or jSeBlod or a few others I believe. The custom fields
is solved with K2, jSeBlod and I think a few others. K2 is just easier.
The entering of data to a specific category with predefined fields is
solved with jSeBlod forms (sorry K2 guys, not sure if you solved this
or can do it, didn't get to it, tried jSeblod - 2 o'clock in the
morning). But now that I have those things solved, how do I link the
items within the categories to the authors so that I can find authors
via their location; or find their published items via their location;
or find their items via their categories and sub-categories? Actually
the latter is solved by using a menu drill down. In other words, and
item will be linked to two structure trees. The one is probably the
main category structure; the latter will be via fields (you find the
items listed in the main-sub-sub-category; or you find the items via
the field1; field 2; field 3, and you are within the
main-sub-subcategory tree). Please please please, this is the
function of my website. There are a few main categories (about 10 to 20
– depends how it grows); each with a few sub-categories (2 or 3); and
each sub-c with all the items as published by the authors who have
something to publish. Only, the number of authors and their locations
are about a 100 times more. And each one of them only needs to be able
to edit their own content items (which I think is solvable via a ACL
extension of some kind).Any takers? Really, if you tell me I'm
a daft idiot cause Joomla does it natively, PLEASE say it. K2 worked
the best half-way, template wise I will have to work on the category
listing view.....why the picture of the item needs to be in the center
above the item in the listing is above me....no pun intended.SOBI2
looked promising but visually terrible, unless one can tie it into a
template well. Alphacontent........not sure what this does, tried
it....but I think its because its not the right option for my needs.
jSeblod as I said seems to work, but the documentation took me as far
as "to be continued". K2 and jSeblod seems to be my answers but I only
got to the fields bit, it only seems to take me half-way. The rest is
an abyss so far as to actually doing something with the fields. Then
there is...I like don't giving names cause it usually means people shut
down to the problem cause I presented an answer....there is Mosets. Now
mosets looks VERY promising...but at $120 its (for me living in South
Africa, being 800ZAR without the new nice template) a possible
expensive mistake to find out if it can or can not do what I need. Please
help. The website idea is simple database wise, like I said, I did it
quite quickly in MS Access, and its an integral design which lifts
Access out of the spreadsheet arena, and truly in the data base
management. Raw data linked via fields to provide usable information. Its,
come to think of it, very much like this forum. The admin guys made
main catergories, and within each, a few sub-categories. Then their is
the members, hundreds of them. Each one of them can post items (posts)
within each sub-category. I can find all the authors who post about the
same topic via the main to sub categories. Or I can go and find a
member and see what he posts. Or I can (I think) find all the members
in London. From there I can see who posts in the extension section.I
wish you all an wonderful day for those who are in daylight, for those
who just woke up, have a good one. To all those coming to South Africa,
Port Elizabeth......enjoy yourself and I hope your team wins (I'm not
much of a soccer fan.....offroad ralley motorcycles and touring is more
my scene).

Hi
After reading your long post and understanding your requirement , it seems that joomla and k2 will fulfill your most of requirement, you don't need a database knowledge to do the job.
If you have complete write up of your project and need help then please send me pm, i could help you in designing your website.
With best wishes.

Hello there dk. Thank you so much for reading, my yes, very long description. I have learned that when you are faced with a problem and need help, try to give as much info as possible and be a clear as possible. Being clear is sometimes my problem, hence that long descriptions.

At the very moment I am designing and finishing up a another website so my focus is not with my problem (above) at this moment. BUT!!! I will make a flow diagram which could also explain what I am trying to do. I see that there is a extension on here by a private guy who saw the need and lack for field search and filtering. That will help me as well, but I read his module doesn't provide for multiple field searches.

I am glad that you understand my problem. I remember it was really easy to setup in MS Access, but I just need to know how to setup that function in Joomla/K2/similar.

I will get back to you first thing next week, but I shall work on that flow diagram in the meantime. I don't really have a write-up of the website, just a need for a function that I know exists but I can't find in Joomla/K2/similar.

Happy trails
