I was wondering if K2 can be used for a website like this.

I am in the process of building my website and need something that can handle this type of database.

I don't see why it won't...
Just setup your category structure and use something like the aidanews module and set it to a grid with as many rows as you would need. Also the category setup can control the display of that page. ie. only showing the category image and title...

Maybe?

Try it on a test server like most of have to do with just about every aspect of the component because the documentation is limited.
