It there someone how can explain how the itemid works in K2?

I looooove the extension but I always end up with Itemid issues... perhaps I´m not understanding how K2 uses and works with the itemid?

If a developer please could explain it to me I would be really grateful.. I´m having some major issues on several sites.. :(
