You can do that by writing some CSS and of course make some small changes either to the language file or the pagination.php in your html folder inside your template. The images you are referring to can be background images.

What i'm trying to do is to have the item thumb (image) along with the previus / next item title at the bottom of each item. (itemNavigation)

Ok, now it is more clear, but I'm afraid I will let you down because it cannot be done. You cannot get the item's image thumb inside the itemNavigation.

you mean that this cannot be done with the "default" settings .. any hacks?!
