"when i add the zip file it creates a file in "
Do you mean a file (one) or all the images?
I assume that if it creates something the directory is writable.
When zipping up the files for upload with the k2 item gallery tab, are you zipping the files directly or are they in a subfolder? The zip file should contain only jpg files and not any subfolders.
Have you tried to disable some of your other components to see if they are interfering as refered to in the joomlaworks post?

i have disabled the supper blogger and simple image pro and the problem is still there.
When i zip the folder i select the images and zip them to create a zip then install via the k2 item.
it seems to be unable to read the folder once it has been unzipped. because when uploaded via ftp to the media/k2/galleries/183 it works it seems to be the zipped file its not recognising.
