Yes I can override a setting from a "father" category in a 'child' category (which is good) but I noticed that changing a setting in a father does not mean that the setting in the child changes too. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I am unsure what determines the reaction of the child. What do you think?

A feature that would be nice to have is the ability to see which values are default (I know you can do it by creating a new category and comparing them in 2 admin windows but that's a lot of work). It probably has a low priority though.....
Thanks for your help.

I like your approach with Excel! Where is this DB and is there anything special that I need to take care of to make it work? 400 categories is a lot....
Don't get what you're saying about changing parameters though. The way I read your post is that you nest your STYLE GUIDES: 1 parent that handles the static/plain pages and multiple children to handle NEWS/PHOTO/etc. So what do you do to make the children act differently than their father and how do you keep track of the changes you made to the children?

OK, understand what you're saying about the STYLE GUIDES.
