I have slideshows appear on the front page of certain menu items, but do not want these appearing within the items that fall underneath them.

Is there any way to have modules assign ONLY to the menu main page and not the items that are associated with it?

I did a workaround for this and loaded the modules in the category descriptions. It works OK but it doesn't help me on tagged-based menu items (which consists mostly of my site).
