Is there a way to allow users to see the K2 Items such as an Attachment, but not download it unless they login/create an account?  Can anyone recommend a strategy or extension for this?

Create an override for the category in question.

edit the item.php file in the override - find the block that shows the attachments -

use the juser to find out if the user is registared

wrap the code that displays the attachments in a test if user is registared (do normal display)

else

(copy the code that displays and remove the link to the download displaying only the name

endif
