How do i not show Items from a sub-category in the parent category view?

I'm sure i'm missing something...

I have a parent category - Applications and ten Sub-Categories

 

At the moment i only have a single item in the Metal Industry sub-cat, but it shows on the Applications (which is a link to the K2 cat Applications, that has no items in it at all) link, i just want to show the sub cats and no items.

 

'Ive tried everything to no avail, any pointers/suggestions anyone?
