I am getting back to this after a long absence.

 

I am trying to understand the various parameter settings, and cannot figure out what controls the title display in this example:  johngwalter.com/cycling

 

I know how to change the larger display of the category title "Cycling", but cannot eliminate the smaller display of the same word directly above it.  It appears to be the category title, since making a spelling change affects both displays, but nothing seems to be able to alter or, preferably, eliminate it.

If you want to remove the smaller Category title above, that's controlled in the Menu Item settings in Joomla. Just go to the specific Cycling menu item -> Parameters (System)  and set the Show the Page Title to NO or if you want a custom text to display there, just add the Page Title and set the Show the Page Title to Yes. If there is no Page Title, joomla will show the default title.
