There is no "edit" button showing to edit the item after logging into the back end, even though all my settings are set in the back end to enable front-end editing.

Yoy should see the edit button in the front-end, not in the backend. Also ensure that the user that is logged does belong to a K2 user group with the appropriate permissions.
