I have a blog article, that shows two different URL's depending on if it is accessed via the K2 blog area of the website, or accessed from the K2content plugin on the homepage (which then causes different page renderings. Is there anyway to fix this.

When accessed from K2 blog area of website:
www.thecoffeelocator.com/index.php/2012-08-09-08-34-48/item/2-coffee-trenders

When accessed from homepage K2 content plugin:
www.thecoffeelocator.com/index.php/component/k2/item/2-coffee-trenders

Note: the website is currently displaying a generic registration page as we are working behind closed doors.

I am having the same problem as the OP but I already tried to create a menu link and the problem still exists when clicking links to the same articles on the front page. I am using the default Joomla SEF options which work fine for the default article manager. Any reason why it's not working for K2?

I juts fixed this with Sh404sef plugin.
I think the free plugin Acesef wi also do the job - give it a try!
