Hi. K2 can handle even greater number of items. Of course you should setup your site accordingly. For example if you make a menu link to fetch all of the one milion items it won't work.

Hi. This is not that simple. K2 was developed with performance in mind, but there are also other factors that affect the performance of your site like it's traffic, your server specifications etc.

Yes, traffic is important thing.
And if there is a tool to make a pre-cache of catalog listings forcibly? The site will contain 10 - 50 thousands of catalog listing pages at all.

Joomla! has a built in caching mechanism. K2 uses this mechanism and also provides an extra level of internal caching. You should search over the internet about resources regarding the Joomla! caching.
