I'm considering using Phoca Gallery to manage my photo albums (as it has better support for adding one image at a time, captions & descriptions, etc...) when compared to the K2 Image Gallery + Simple Image Gallery Pro setup we're all used to with K2.

There are Phoca Gallery plugins, so that you can use similar syntax to the SIG PRO. Instead of:

{gallery}K2itemIdNumber{/gallery}

We'd use:
{pgsimple id=1}

Or:
{phocagallery view=category|categoryid=1|limitstart=0|limitcount=0}

When editing the K2 item, it would be nice, then, if the Image Gallery tab presented a dropdown of published Phoca Gallery Categories and let you choose between the "simple" and "standard" phoca plugins...

TL;DR: Phoca Gallery would run circles around SIG PRO if we could tweak the Image Gallery tab to provide a dropdown of Phoca Gallery Categories.

me too please. How can this be done, I would rather use the phoca gallery as well.

Check the phoca forums and search for K2. I remember reading there about a hack to make the plugin for phoca work with k2

I'm pretty sure the 'hack' that you found on the Phoca forums was an older modification that the Phoca Plugin needed in order to work on a K2 item.

In my case, I wound up using the "Multiple Images" plugin for K2:

Works great, not as powerful as PhocaGallery, but it resizes and lets you do captions / credits on each photo, using the "image" tab in K2...
