Dear,
Now i can easily add an image to a k2 item using the image tab. My theme makes sure that that image is placed on the left of the item text.
I would like be add more images (thumbnails) below the text that can enlarge with lightbox or something like that.

Could someone guide me on how to accomplish this?

The latest version of k2 2.6.2 will alllow you to create an extra field of the image type and users can upload multiple images to the k2 item. By default it will show in the extra field stream, but there is also new syntax to use any extra field in an override where you want it.
Also, sigpro, will allow a zip file of images to show below the item content
