Where do the categories come from in the drop down 'select category' box come from? Categories listed in the Categories folder in dashboard do not display in the drop-down box.
How can I make them functional?

I am not quite sure what you are looking at your dashboard but the K2 module renders all K2 categories.
Be sure to check the correct (ro no) root category from your module's parameters.
