In Wordpress, when you make a post, your URL can easily have a date in the URL. This is great for a news site. (i.e. www.domain.com/news/2013/04/story)

In K2, do you need to make a parent category "news", and then child category 2013, and then another child category "04" to make this work?

Any advice would help on how to organize news articles and how to make those appear in the URL.

I don't think Joomla!'s permalinks work this way.
I think you might need an SEO/SEF extension for this one, in order not to add multiple categories.

In your position I would look at the extend K2 section of this site or the JED for an extension.

I think sh404sef can do it like this or pretty close.
