Am looking to disable to pop up detail image on a per item (per article) basis - not on a per category basis.

Can update the item template item.php to evaluate whether an item has a particular class set, but can't see where to specify a class for a particular item.

any ideas or alternative approaches suggested?

Setting a different template at category level won't work as I have a categories of Headline or Featured Articles or Latest Articles as example. Within any one of these categories, some items will need the image pop up and some will not.
