This is probably a dumb one, but my customer wants to be able to create his new items offline and then paste them into a new item. All thats fine however he wants the fonts and styling to be picked up from the template css as though you were editing online.

If you paste from word you get all words fonts and rubbish and not clean code
If you paste as text you lose all styling and links.

Is there a standard method to do this or is the only real way to paste in plain text then do all you links and etc.

It seems as he is a beginner and doesnt want to show to visitors his editing errors ?

If it is so case then he can before first Item Apply/Save put Item, Access level as "Special".
Then he can simply log in at the front as Superuser and nobody besides him will see Item, not even Authors, Editors, etc...

When he is satisfied how Item looks he put it back to "Public" ans Save.
If he has not Login module at the front find him at Google direct login link for Joomla (front).

I am doing this way all the time. Less stress and you have more time to finish your article, you never put any Item with editing errors online, but you can always see how it looks at the front.

Tell your client to use notepad if he is using a PC or textwrangler (free app) if he is using a Mac as well.
He won't be able to change the styling but he will get to keep his paragraph formatting with no rubbish code.
