I have many external urls linking to my site. Is there a way to create a redirect to the new pages that do not have "item" in the url?

You can use an .htaccess redirect ( a generator can be found here www.htaccessredirect.net/ ) or use Joomla!'s redirect plugin www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/joomla-25/303-using-the-redirect-manager
