I'm looking for an extension that will allow me to build a variety of simple database applications -- address books, user profiles, etc. Basically I'm looking to be able to create database with different fieldsthat can then be searched/viewed by users on my site.

I'd also like the ability to create different templates for each database, so that the appearance of the searched data will be different for each.

K2 was recommended, but after taking a quick look, I'm not certain it's designed for that use.

Can someone offer some advice?

If I understood you correctly you are looking more for a community builder rather than CCK like functionality.

I believe I am looking for a CCK builder -- sorry, I'm just now beginning to understand the terminology.

What I want to do is build a variety of web applications that will allow users to submit data via a form and then retrieve data via a search.

Some sample applications I'm considering:

Classified ad database;
Contact/address book;
Database of businesses

The way I've done this with other applications is:

1) Identify/create a database;
2) Create fields to hold the data;
3) Design a form for data submission;
4) Design a response page to display the data when searched
