When I add an article to the main page with k2, which is below the footer covers the entire content of the site to the breadcrumbs, if i do not use k2 and add articles through the standard com_content that's okay

You could check it through Firebug to see whether or not some block doesn't close properly. Also if you run your page through a validator it would help as well.
