I am a new K2 user. I recently installed it over an existing Joomla site. I really like the capabilities but I am having real trouble wiith the category menu.

I want it to display items from a single category only. I can select the category but "Fetch items from children categories" is set to yes and grayed out. It cannot be changed.

The second problem is that the two lead articles are being displayed without title and author information.

You can set for this specific parent category to work in Catalog mode. This option is available through the category's parameters and means that when browsing to this category you will only see the articles of this category and not of its subcategories. So maybe this will help you sort out your first issue.

For your second issue I saw the titles and authors of the Leading items just fine, so I believe you have solved this.
