I've had K2 running on this website for quite some time. Its always worked. However today i got a call from a client. I looked into it, and the whole category page that loads shows the edit item buttons, as well as add a new item to this category, however none of them are clickable. Any ideas?
all of the other category pages are working fine. it seems to be an isolate problem to one category. front end editing is enabled, and that category is selected in the permissions for that user group to allow editing

Maybe you have a javascript issue. Could you check through a developer tool in your browser if you get any errors when clicking the button?

for all that follow:
the problem was in an article that was displaying on the page. One of the clients used microsoft word prior to pasting the text into the website, which inserted a div tag which caused it to stop functioning
