I don't think this is possible but I'll ask anyway.

What I need to do is have a joomla menu item called, "Author"
"Author" would effectively be a container for 2 sub items.
One subitem: add an entry to the site's blog page (blog is a category)
The other subitem: add and entry to the site news page (news is a category)

I can't find a way to make this happen. Obviously my goal is to restrict front end editing to 2 different categories. I don't see a way using any combination of joomla user / K2 user / menu options to make this approach work.

Any ideas?

You can create two menu items to K2 Item Edit form type and choose for each one the preselected category you want.
Then in your K2 user group just filter the access between those categories.

My apology for not replying with a big THANK YOU earlier. I had not received a notification that a reply for my request for help had been answered.

Your suggestion worked like a champ. The only *problem* I see, and it is trivial (and acceptable) is that while the category comes up preselected the other category thta I authorized for my test user was also selectable. My users are scaredy cats so they won't drill down to see if other categories are available, thus the teeny problem is just thta .

Thanks again for the suggestion, I'm a real newbie to K2 but the more I experiment with it the more I like it.
