Why make muliple extra field groups? was created by Odin Mayland
I am building a manufacturer website that is using extra fields (EF) to show specific info on each product. There are hundreds of categories of products. I was creating an EF group per category but then realized that if a EF is left empty then it will not display on the front end.
I also was having to create duplicate EFs like "Diameter" and then associate it with a EF group for that category. So far I have 11 "Diameter" EFs for 11 EF groups. The site has 77 EFs but only 20 unique EFs, then rest are duplicates. (Feature Request: Be able to assign one EF to multiple EF groups)
So I figure, I could just put all 200+ EFs into one EF group. The manufacturer would just fill in the appropriate EFs and ignore the EFs that do not apply to that particular category of items.
It appears that Extra Field Groups are only to reduce the number of Extra Fields listed in the k2 item extra field tab.
So my question is why would I want to create multiple EF groups?

Hi,
I didn't see your answer here before replying on the other post.
Its Ok, you can factorize the extra fields as much as you can, even you can create an extra field group for each field.
Then, using my plugin, you will be able to select the extra fields groups as needed in each category, without duplicating the extra fields.
Hope it is clear now.

My subscription to this thread must not be working, because I did not get your reply.
In the mean time I had email you this question. But it appear you have already answered it.
If I have the same titled extra field in multiple EF groups and then use MEFG to assign multiple groups to a catgeory, will the duplicate EFs show in the K2 Item Extra Field tab?
For example, will the EF: "Tires" only show once since it is a duplicate?
EF Group: Cars
--- EF: Tires
EF Group: Motorcycles
--- EF: Tires
K2 Category: Vehicles
--- EF Groups: Cars and Motorcycles
EF: Tires
And, how is the ordering of EFs on the item page controlled when I choose multiple EF groups for a k2 cat?

Hi,
MEFG handles EF with id, not title, so it will show duplicate EFs as long as their id is different.
But, I don't why you need to duplicate EFs?
In your example, you can create ONE group for Tires with one field and assign it to any category.
Please have a look into the demo website to know how MEFG works: demo.joomreem.com, login to the backend with demo/demo and give it a try.
